Mercedes-Benz Championship
Monday was spent practising my short game and hitting balls in the morning, I was working on a couple of things and enjoyed the opportunity to be on the range with only three other players as it was a small field of only 78 players this week it wasn't like normal where you can't get moved for another hundred guys, their caddies and coaches. After some lunch in the caddy hut at the back of the range I went on the Titleist van to have some of my clubs regripped and collected my new wedges for next year. There is a rule change for grooves on clubs next year for Professionals so the manufacturers are trying to get the clubs to their players now so they can have a chance to practice with them and make adjustments. Titleist are lucky that the grooves in their irons are legal so the only changes I will have to make are with my wedges, some of the other manufacturers are having to change irons as well which will make it even more work to get their players ready and also for the players to adjust to the change in the flight and spin of the ball. I spent the rest of the afternoon on the putting green before going back to the hotel for an early night after Sunday's long journey.
I played a practice round with Danny Willett on Tuesday morning. The course was in great condition, the greens were rolling very nicely and at a good speed, the rough was a little annoying as it was very penal two steps from the fairway and had patches of thick clumps before thinning out the further you got from the fairway, I think that rough should be graduated from short to thick so that the farther you are from the fairway the more you are punished, I wasn't the only one with this thought as it seemed to be a common topic of discussion for the week. After lunch it was more practice before an evening out in Cologne city centre for some dinner and another look at the Cathedral. I went to see it when I was in Cologne in 2007; it was just as impressive if not more so this time, and they are still working on the building of it.
I played with SSP Chowrasia and Mark Brown on Thursday, I got off to a solid start in what I thought were tricky conditions, and finished the front nine at two under par. I made a silly double bogey on the par 3 eleventh and finished my round at level par, which was frustrating after the good start but not disastrous as the last few holes are tough and can catch you out quite easily. Friday I played with Jeev Milkha Singh and Gregory Bourdy. It's always nice to catch up with Jeev he is a really nice guy and it was nice to hear his plans. A mixture of bad play and bad luck added up to an ugly six over par round.
The weekend was much better score wise, Saturday was a solid two under par. After my round we went into Cologne to meet a few of the caddies in one of the Irish bars to watch the Man Utd and Tottenham game, there is only so much of BBC World and CNN you can watch in two weeks!
Sunday was my best round of the week in the worst conditions, a three under par 69. I holed a few more putts over the weekend but my game was not that different, it just shows you the fine line between a bad score and a good one. I flew home after my round and will be home for a couple of weeks, it is going to be a busy end to the season and I feel as though my game this year is improving, so there is still time for a some good results.
A few people have asked why there was no wedding photo on last weeks update, I haven't got them back from the photographer yet but this is a snap a friend took. You can see my best man and coach John Harrison just over Lisa's shoulder, making sure my stance was correct!
