My luggage finally arrived Sunday afternoon and I headed up to the course to register and get all my paperwork sorted out. When I arrived at the airport the day before I had been given my Lexus LS460 for the week and this made the 20-minute drive to the course very enjoyable. They have a rule on the PGA Tour that caddies aren't allowed in the locker rooms so it was up to me to sort the locker out and take care of the clubs.
Once I had done that I went back downstairs to get my players pass to gain access to the course and clubhouse for the week. The USGA are brilliant and make the whole procedure so simple, one room with six or seven different tables in, all taking care of something different, registration, family passes, practice times... you get the picture. After thirty minutes or so I headed back to the hotel to rest as I had an early start the next morning.
Monday morning I had to leave the hotel around 5.30am, with still being on UK time and waking up at 4.30am this wasn't to bad. I went to the range to loosen up and headed to the first tee for my 7am practice tee. I played with defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, Richie Ramsay and we were joined by Matt Goggin on the back nine. The course was nice, with a links sort of feel... quite a few holes have room to run shots on to the green. The course wasn't overly long but the main key to the week was the quick slopping greens, land the ball above the hole and you'd struggle to keep it on the green. I spent the afternoon working with Bob Vokey on the range setting up some new wedges, with the greens being so firm I wanted new wedges with sharp grooves to help spin the ball.
Same start time on Tuesday morning and this time I played with world number one Tiger Woods and long hitting Bubba Watson. I played with Tiger a couple of years ago in China and it's always good fun to catch up, he is a super nice guy. Surprisingly there was a huge crowd to watch me... well it might have been for the world number one! I spent the whole nine holes hitting my second shots first... and at times by quite a margin! I played the front nine and spent the rest of the morning on the range working on my wedges and short game. I headed back to the hotel around 1pm to have a lazy afternoon, as I didn't want to wear myself out.
My practice time on Wednesday morning was with an old friend Sam Walker, we played the back nine and it was nice to catch up with Sam and watch him play some lovely golf. Overall the three practice days went really well, I felt like I got to know the course well enough and knew my game plan and where I needed to be going. I spent lots of time on my short game and trying to get the pace of the greens, which I felt as though I had.
Late start on Thursday morning let me have a look at the morning scores and showed that the course was playing pretty tough. There had been a heavy thunderstorm overnight that had softened the course a lot and gave the early starters a big advantage because as the day went on the course dried out and played tougher. I finished with 74, which wasn't too bad but not what I'd hoped for, I hit plenty of fairways and greens but couldn't get the hang of the greens. I had three 3 putts and didn't hole much else but still felt like I putted OK. I was tired when we finished as it took five and a half hours to play our round, I did a couple of interviews and headed back to the hotel to rest up, have some food and get ready for the second round.
The second round was very similar to the first... hitting lots of good shots and not taking advantage of them, add in the odd three putt on Oakmont's ridiculous greens and it all added up to 76... this left me on +10 which doesn't sound very good but was enough to make the half way cut. I finished with a birdie and two pars which was very pleasing, as I knew I had to if I wanted to be around for the weekend. Two words about the second round, "Paul Casey" ...66 on that golf course was a joke, no real surprise for anyone who has seen Paul at his best.
Saturday is known as moving day and I was very disappointed that I didn't make the most of some good play... I struggled a bit and couldn't make my good shots into birdies. I finished with 77 and went the wrong way on the leaderboard.
I was out in the third group on Sunday, made a huge change to the last group the previous year. I played really well on the front nine, not missing a fairway until my ball bounced a foot off the fairway at the ninth and lead to my first bogey of the day to turn in level, same story at the next had me one over par. I had good chances on the next three holes but failed to make any of them. Once again on the fourteenth my drive pitched on the fairway and ended up in the rough that in turn led to another bogey. I managed to drive the seventeenth but followed that with a three putt for par. A solid par at the last had my best round of the week, a two over 72. Almost as soon as I had finished I was heading off to the airport to catch a flight to New York, London and finally Newcastle. It was another enjoyable week, as it always is playing in the world's best events. I have a week off now to recover from the US Open, hopefully this will be long enough!
